A dark folk tale of desperation, temptation and making a deal when there seems to be nowhere else to turn. Drawing on the old magpie rhyme and crossroads folklore, "One For Sorrow" follows a man who trades his troubles for the promise of something better, only to discover that every bargain has a price. A story about getting what you wished for—and wishing you hadn't.

Lyrics

Well hello Mr Magpie
How are the wife and kids
I haven’t got the time to stop
My name is on his list
The hounds of hell are at my heels
The lights are getting dim
But I guess that’s just the price
You pay for living life in sin

And it’s one
For sorrow, two for joy
Three for the girl
And four for that boy
Five for silver
And six for gold
Seven for my story
Never to be told

It was three in the morning
When I made that fateful deal
My life had hit rock bottom
I was writing out my will
So I travelled to the cross roads
Dug a hole six feet deep
And threw in all my troubles
Left them there for him to keep

And it’s one for sorrow, two for joy
Three for the girl, and four for that boy
Five for silver, and six for gold
Seven for my story never to be told

I asked for silver but he gave me gold
Led me down that darkened path
And left me in that hole
The price I paid, had a heavy toll
Thirty coins was all it took
To give away my soul

I did everything he asked
I even took a life
Now I’m asking for another year
To set a few things right
I need to find salvation
A way back to the light
I need to turn my life
Around before heading to the night

And it’s one for sorrow
Two for joy
Three for the girl
And four for that boy
Five for silver
And six for gold
Seven for my story
Never to be told

And it's one for sorrow
Two for mirth
Three at the funeral
And four at the birth
Five for heaven
And six for hell
Seven for that devil
Old Lucifer himself
Seven for my story
As he drags me down to hell
